    Responsibilities

    Process Innovation – Research Engineer: Glass Technology

     

    The Process Innovation – Research Engineer: Glass Technology will be responsible for new and existing process development and improvements. The candidate will be able to work in the research and development setting as well as communicate with Guardian manufacturing facilities throughout the world.

     

     

    POSITION SUMMARY:

    • We are currently seeking a Research Engineer: Glass Technology to join our Science and Technology team. The desired candidate will provide technical glass knowledge to support complex, multi-disciplinary technology advancement projects. The candidate must interact with research, regional operations and local plant personnel to develop a point of view on current and future process improvements and drive long-term value creation for Guardian Glass.

     

    PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: 

    (All other duties as assigned)

    • Investigating glass and material processes fit for use in Guardian businesses and R&D. 
    • Activities may include: new technology evaluation; experimentation; laboratory simulations; data analysis; materials property measurements; microscopic analyses – all geared towards fundamental understanding of glass process innovation and applications to Guardian businesses
    • Perform troubleshooting and data analysis for process problems and improvement in existing operations
    • Perform laboratory testing for initial development and/or in-plant data generation and analysis

     

     

    SCOPE AND IMPACT:

    Perform a broad range of work with minimal supervision while receiving guidance on more complex testing and evaluation issues from management. Provide technical expertise to a project team responsible for current and new process development and analytical techniques.

     

    Desired Skills and Experience

     

    EDUCATION:

    • B.S. or M.S. degree in Materials, Chemical, Mechanical Engineering, or in Materials / Ceramic Science or Associates Degree and 5 to 10 years of work experience working in a laboratory and / or glass manufacturing industry.

     

    EXPERIENCE:

    Required:

    • Process knowledge and experience in full scale manufacturing and development using production scale equipment.
    • Scale up of projects from initial development to manufacturing.
    • Strong problem-solving skills
    • Solid technical writing and presentation skills
    • General personal computer knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Power Point
    • Strong communication skills are required to project information in a professional manner to both technical and non-technical groups
    • Open minded with a strong desire to work with and contribute to an innovative team Desirable:
    •  
    • Solid educational or work experience and experimental foundation with a working knowledge of glass process development and manufacturing.
    • Project management and executing of projects that require multi-functional involvement for implementation
    • Experience with statistical software packages such as Minitab or JMP
    • Experience with Advanced Analytics tools
    • Lean/Six Sigma Experience
    • Familiarity with testing methods for glass composition and physical properties and raw material characterization and testing. Such as: XRF, ICP, DSC, Thermal Expansion, Glass Melting, Glass Preparation Techniques, Glass Fractography, Defect Identification (Microscopic), SEM / EDX The position will require travel in the range of 20%. This position will be based in Southeastern Michigan at Guardian’s Science and Technology Center (Carleton, MI).
