Under the direction of the Shift Manager, the Hot End Supervisor oversees the operation of the batch house, melting furnace, tin bath and lehr.
Typical activities are as follows: directly supervises the activities of the hot end operators, working closely with the Cold End Supervisor to minimize losses on changeovers; analyzing defect problems; inspecting and analyzing raw batch materials to ensure conformance with specifications; insuring accurate weighing, mixing and delivery of batch material to the melting furnace; overseeing the melting of dry batch and refining the molten glass; controlling the flow of glass through the tin bath, monitoring the molten tin, the atmosphere and the casing temperature; changing glass thickness and width as required by production; assuring that glass is annealed to specifications; having equipment available to handle any upset condition; assuring that plant rules are consistently enforced; training employees in safety; completing and updating personnel records; counseling employees with work performance problems; completing shift reports, conducting employee meetings, appraising employees on work performance; conducting employment interviews for the crew.
Knowledge and Abilities:
Ability to supervise in a people-oriented environment, prefer person with past experience in a demanding position, prior work history should include challenging assignments in a busy work environment, must be detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills, aggressive and mature, must be a quick learner with excellent decision making ability, must have excellent communication skills both verbal and written, excellent appraisal and interviewing skills, prefer person with technical orientation.
Minimum of two years demonstrated supervisory work experience in a manufacturing environment.
Minimum of four-year college degree in science and engineering. Prior flat glass experience may be substituted for education.
