Responsibilities

Guardian has an opening for an R&D Group Leader in our Glass Processing group.  Key skills required for the position are:

 

The Glass Processing group handles everything after the float process. Deals with all of the value-added aspects of the glass product: coating, fabrication, etc. The difference between this and a product engineering role is this person is managing the entire portfolio of R&D projects from different aspects of each stage: from conceptual to commercialization. This will be dealing with an innovation pipeline of no more than 10 projects at a time.

 

Technical:

  • Demonstrates depth of technical knowledge in at least one of the core Guardian Industries competency areas, as well as sufficient knowledge in the other core competencies to be able to provide technical leadership. Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Guardian’s key competency areas include glass processing; glass fabrication; float glass; glass coating; ceramics.
  • Quickly establishes technical credibility and presence both internally and with customers.
  • Develops an IP strategy aligned with business and technical goals to build a strong IP portfolio.

  • Actively engages with the issue at hand. Gets to the depth of an issue by asking the right questions. 
  • Takes a complex situation and focuses on the key issues. Able to, and comfortable dealing with ambiguity
  • Willing and able to take risks. Comfortable in a “not play it safe” environment.
  • Recognizes when it is necessary to step in and take charge.

 

Business Leadership:

  • Aligns around the Vision: Establishes and communicates the vision broadly to ensure alignment among relevant groups and establish where resources should be focused.
  • Organizational Assessment: Knows how and when to assess if the organization is meeting its goals and if not, identifies and acts on what needs to change.
  • This position will be leading a team of 5 to 7 team members including Research Scientists, Scientists, Engineers, and Technicians.
  • Decision Making: Can identify the critical information that is needed to make a decision. Makes decisions that are fair, that take into consideration the input of others. Explains decisions effectively so that others are committed to be supportive.
  • Presence: Projects an image that compels people to listen and garners their confidence.

 

People Leadership:

  • Staffing: Makes sure the organization has the best people to get the job done; Knows how to leverage individual employee strengths and make appropriate job assignments; Can attract and hire the best.
  • Mentoring: Uses knowledge and personal experiences to mentor employees on how to be successful in their roles, and to develop them for future growth.
  • Objective Setting: Establishes clear objectives for employees that are aligned with the vision, and are challenging and realistic; Ability to inspire great people to perform above their capabilities.
  • Performance Management: Provides regular and timely feedback to employees; recognizes accomplishments; identifies competency gaps and acts to close them.

 

Background:

  • Advanced degree in science or engineering, and relevant prior experience in an R&D environment
  • Demonstrated project management skills
